Joe: I was listening to a song on the airplane just thinking of ideas, and like… the first thing that um, popped in my mind as far as what to play with was how the song „Bookends” from beginning to the end… In the beginning of the video the song is stripped down to just the piano playing and when you get to the end of the song all it is, is the piano playing at the same time. So what you have in that song is just like, this momentum that’s built from just the piano which is, like, almost nothing to something huge in the bridge and then it comes back down to nothing. And I’m a big fan of fantasy and um… plus, you know, I know the guys really well because I’m in the band.

Joe: I can conceptualize things.

Joe: I-I think and make things happens. Ding-ding.

Nathan: There’s a lot of musical changes in this particular song which really gives us a lot of freedom to-to kind of play with the different moods.

Joe: I think it’s great working with Nathan because we’re constantly coming up with ideas and, um, coming up with solutions to these problems that we’ve having. And in the end… Ah! „In the end”… the-the product is, like, amazing.

Nathan: We had this brilliant production designer uh, Patrick Tatopoulos who’s done a lot of feature work. He did „Dark city” and „Independence Day” and he worked on, uh, „Stargate”, as well.

- Tomorrow… it’s all going to look magnificent.

Joe: I think it was great working with Patrick because I came up with designs for the video. I’m in the middle of the tour, and I can’t be here all the time and I felt really comfortable handing the design aspect of everything going on to Patrick so that he could, like that what I made and take it even further.

Nathan: Joe was really excited coming on the set and actually seeing it, and knowing, like that this came out of our heads. And there it is.

Joe: The main set where we’re going to be performing they’re building right now so it doesn’t look… exactly like what you’ll see when the video comes out. The copper that the stage is made out of has been aged. I’d say it’s been aged about two day. It looks like a million years. Have a little Statue of Liberty vibe going on. This is the central gargoyle. That’s going to be going on the ledge. Uh, Patrick designed it. He gave him a little goatee.

�– The hieroglyphics that are on there… they’re actually not hieroglyphics, they’re… it’s the Mason Alphabet.

Nathan: The „T” would be this one down here with the dot in the center. The „H” would be this one here which is that shape here.

- Yeah.

Nathan: And the another „A” and another „N” and that’s „Nathan”.

- Can’t read what it says but it actually says some stuff on there so if you’re pretty resourceful you can… go find out what it means.

Joe: Chicks with Dixon.

Chester: He’s last name is „Cox”

Nathan: That’s original.

Phoenix: This is Matt… whatever I don’t know what he does. AKA the producer.

Nathan: We try and have a feel for… for what going to be before we go into it as much as possible. But there’s always things spontaneously that happen. There’s different lighting elements that happen. There’s different performance elements. There’s all kinds of things that go on during the process so it’s constantly changing and evolving.

- What is all this? What is all this green stuff for?

- The reason that it’s green is because that color doesn’t really occur in nature. So we’re able ot extract that out and replace everywhere where that color is with another image.

Nathan: These are storyboards to play with the composition to find out what angles we want to shoot the band at. It also allows the director of photography to know where he needs to put the lights and were the camera position as well.

Chester: Dude, I’m like the king of all things that are intense. And I’m so intense that when I crush my thundering foot down to the ground it shatters the pillar.

Mike: Right now, our good friend Angelina Jolie is doing my makeup. But her agent would kill us if we actually showed her face.

Phoenix: We’re going to go into the fitting room and meet with Mandy, who is our stylist for the video.

Phoenix: Who’s your favorite Linkin Park…er?

Mandy: Joe Hahn – he’s so cute. Oh, my God. I love him.

- Joe?

Mandy: Mr. Hahn. He likes to go by Daddy Hahn.

Phoenix: Daddy Hahn.

Joe: I didn’t tell her to say that.

Nathan: What I found easiest about having a bigger budget – We’ve had a lot of preparation time in this job and just like any other job we start with our preproduction we go into production and we go into our postproduction but it’s a bit longer. That’s basically, the biggest thing that I’ve noticed.

Mike: Do you hear this? Have they been doing this earlier?

- No. It’s first time.

Mike: This is the first time we’ve done…

- Go, check it out.

Mike: Dude, you should have heard „Paper Cut”. When we did „Paper Cut” this fast I could just barely get the word out.

Mike: Oh, yeah.

Joe: The tape runs faster, the music runs faster. The tape runs the same speed but when it comes back it’s played in slow motion. It’s a lot easier on us.

Brad: Basically, it’s magic.

Phoenix: Live shows – you only get to play throught the song once. On this we get to play it like 40 times. So it’s 40 times as good.

Nathan: To me, that’s the best part – when we’re shooting the performance footage. Once you lock in to what the vibe is you know how fast the camera needs to be going. You know what exactly you’re looking for.

Brad: The headphones are basically my plug into the matrix. I have them constructed for each video and Mike works with me on them. These are the new pair for „In the end” and I’m really stoked on them. Without them I’m in a totally different time… frame, dimension, reality zone. I really need to wear these to be in tune with the matrix and what’s going on.

Joe: We’re doing the rain right now. It’s going to be pouring down rain. The song is going to get really intense and excitement’s going to come to a boil. Lighting will strike and the birds will fly. Well, it’ll be cool.

- Did you bring your water wings for the rain scene?

Phoenix: I have a… one that goes around my stomach. It’s got a little duck head on it.

- How are you feeling about this water thing?

Brad: Ask me that again in about an hour.

Rob: I have a shelter on me.

- Is that good?

Rob: Also the sprinklers are kind of like… probably six feet in front of me.

- So you’re not going to get wet?

Rob: I’m probably going to just get a little bit wet while the other guys are going to soaked. It’s all good.

- You want to get wet?

Chester: Not really.

- It’s just kind of the initial wetness that’s kind of the bummer part.

Chester: It’s like, yeah it’s to be cool to do it. And then like no ’cause like I’m going to get all wet.

- How you feel about it?

Brad: Do you know why today was a great day?

- Why?

Brad: Because it’s over.

Rob: It was fun.

- You ended up getting wet, huh?

Rob: Ended up getting soaked. I didn’t get out of it.

- They’re already talking about hail and snow for the next video. Either that or fire.

Brad: That’s not funny.

- Menjetek, n�zz�tek meg.

Mike: Hallanotok kellett volna a „Paper Cut”-ot. Amikor a „Papercut”-ot forgattuk, ebben a sebess�gben, �pp hogy csak kituttam mondani a szavakat.

Mike: Durva!

Joe: A kamer�k �s a zene gyorsabban forog. A filmszalag ugyanabban a sebess�gben forog, de mikor visszaj�tszuk akkor lass�tva, norm�lis temp�ban l�tjuk. Ez nagyon k�nny�.

Brad: Tulajdonk�ppen ez var�zslat.

Phoenix: A koncerteken egy sz�mot csak egyszer kell v�gigj�tszanod. Itt egy sz�mot kell 40szer lej�tszanod. Ez k�r�lbel�l a 40. alkalom.

Nathan: Sz�momra, a legjobb, amikor a sz�npadi jeleneteket forgatjuk. Egyszer r�hangolodsz a ritmusra, r�j�ssz, hogy milyen gyorsan kell a kamer�nak forognia. Pontosan tudod hogy mit akarsz.

Brad: Val�j�ban ezekkel a fejhallgat�kkal l�pek a m�trixba. Minden alkalomra kital�lok egy mint�t r�, �s Mike seg�t megcsin�lni. Ez az �j p�r az „In the end”-hez, nekem nagyon tetszik. Ezek n�lk�l egy teljesen m�s id�ben vagyok, m�s t�rben, m�s dimenzi�ban, m�s z�n�ban. Musz�j ezeket viselnem, ahhoz, hogy �sszhangban legyek a m�trix-szal, �s azzal, ami �ppen t�rt�nik.

Joe: Most az es�s r�szt forgatjuk. Esni fog az es�. A dal kezd majd �rdekess� v�lni, egyre izgalmasabb lesz. Villogni fognak a f�nyek, madarak fognak repdesni. Nos, nagyon kir�ly lesz.

- Hozt�l magaddal �sz�gumit az es�s r�szhez?

Phoenix: Van egy ilyen a gyomrom k�r�l. Van rajta egy kicsi kacsafej.

Brad: Ez nem vicces.

Nathan: We shot the video, we transfered the film. In the transfer procces, we color-correct it and bring out all the color that we’re looking for. Um, we can also crunch the blacks a little bit and make it more contrasty and really make the film look beatiful. That’s my favorite edit in between Michael…

Now we’re in the editing procces. We’ve loaded all the footage and we’re going through it finding the best shoots, finding the best edits.
